I found the organ much better on the Oasys (no surprise, I have a CX3), and I actually liked the piano better on the Oasys also. Sampling and sequencing are not important (I'm aware the PC3 does not have sampling capabilities). The screen on the O is awesome. Quality and quantity of sounds is important.

Good controller features are important, but the board also has to be easy to find sounds, layer, split, etc.

I guess what I'm looking for is a main board, or "go to" board to be used primarily live. You make some good points - some of which I am aware of and other good reminders. The M3 is OK, but it's not remotely in the same league as the Oasys. I'm not sorry at all that I got the PC3X - I like it quite a bit. I bought the PC3 as a backup to my Oasys because I couldn't afford to not have a backup board, but I also couldn't afford a second Oasys. This is one of those questions where you need to tell us more information about what you want to do.įor me they complement each other. The PC3 isn't terribly hard to use - it's a huge improvement over the K2600, but the 8-times bigger screen makes a difference. It's like having a PC-based editor built into the board. The PC3 costs 1/3 of what the Oasys did, and it does way more than 1/3 of what the Oasys can do, so in that sense it's a better value, but there are a lot of things I can do on my Oasys that I can't quite make happen on my PC3.ĭon't underestimate that enormous screen, either. The Oasys has tons of power - 172 note regular polyphony, 80-note virtual analog, etc. Occasionally I do something quasi-theatrical where those become my sound-effect buttons. The sampling is just fine on the Oasys - I really like the pads under the screen. I find the organ on the Oasys to be better than the PC3X, though I prefer the piano of the PC3X - it has more playable dynamic range. There are also many more controllers than what the PC3 has. If you've selected a CX3 (Hammond) zone, you get drawbars on the sliders, chorus vibrato, overdrive, and a bunch of other parameters on the knobs. Push the Tone Adjust button and the sliders and knobs switch to be the function of whatever zone you selected. In one mode you have the 9 faders as part volume. The way they have set up the fader and knob layers is very intuitive and cool. In other areas, the Oasys is a much better controller. You can also mix and match controllers - for example, you can have slider A set to volume for zone 1,2,3, and 4, so you can build a killer layer of something like strings and still have one controller adjust them all simultaneously. The PC3X is good for controlling lots of extra MIDI modules, because they have a more usable (IMO) method of having any zone be any MIDI channel. I play live with an Oasys 76, and it is both a better and a worse controller than the PC3X, which I also own. In a lot of waysthe 4 year old Oasys is still king. It depends on what you want to do with it. Good point Erik - even though the Korg M3 didn't have the "clarity" in some of the sounds, I found it to be "organic" (for a lack of better description) and I liked playing it. Personally, I would tend towards the PC3 (which absolutely rules in terms of controller capability) and a supplementary setup.

Or you can get a fairly nice laptop and software instrument setup for $1700. If you're a Korg fan, for example, you can get a reboxed M3-61 (warranteed, from a dealer) on ebay, AND a PC3, for the same price as an Oasys.

Rather, the question is "does the $2300 PC3 plus whatever else I feel like spending $1700 on, sound/work better than the Oasys?"

IMO, the issue isn't "does the $2300 PC3 sound/work better than the Oasys?" in fact, for the price, that is what I would consider. I guess I have trouble seeing how you could really consider both of those. But although I love the PC3 and think its sounds are truly extraordinary, there is one issue which is major for some folks (maybe not for you): Do you need to sample? If so, that pretty much answers the question right then and there. The PC3 (which I own and love) keeps coming up as an option to be compared to other workstations.
